Driving Classes

Since 1919, the Delaware Safety Council (DSC) has proudly been a pioneer in providing safety training and resources to both industry and the public. The DSC, a private non-profit (c)(3) non-government organization, is devoted to promoting the protection of life and health in the workplace, in the home, on the highway and in the community by actively providing education/training resources and services.  

Defensive Driving Courses

Our Defensive Driving courses are fully approved and certified for auto insurance premium reductions.

The Delaware Safety Council offers defensive driving classes online 24/7 and in classroom locations throughout the state of Delaware.  If a business or community group is interested in bringing a defensive driving class to their site, the DSC will host the class on-site for that business or community group*. Participants can not only become better drivers, but save up to 15% on the liability portion of their insurance premium for three years.  

Flagger Certification Classes

The Delaware Safety Council offers flagger training, which is necessary to become a certified flagger.

The Delaware Safety Council offers monthly flagger certification courses at its Training Center located at 2 Penns Way, Suite 201, New Castle, DE 19720. Courses require pre registration and are filled on a first come first served basis. The cost is $65 per person and includes student materials and certification card. Flagger Certification is valid for 4 years and provides essential education about directing motorists on and around roadway work sites. 


First Aid & CPR/AED Certification Classes

The Delaware Safety Council offers First Aid and CPR/AED Certification classes to educate participants on how to prepare for and respond to emergencies.  The American Safety & Health Institute (ASHI) certifications are valid for two years and classes are held at both our training center and on-site for businesses and community groups*. 

Childcare & Babysitting Safety Classes

The Delaware Safety Council offers training for young people interested in babysitting.  The American Safety & Health Institute (ASHI) curriculum covers basic child care information, including emergency action steps and personal safety topics.  Class is used to familiarize and provide young adults, and other types of students, with basic skill training and information that is necessary in caring for infants and children, such as, emergency action steps, personal safety, fire safety, infant care, basic first aid, and choking management. 

Pet First Aid & Emergency Care

An essential course for pet owners, this ASHI certification course will give students up-to-date, medically accurate information as well as instruction on the proper sequence of actions to take in various first aid emergencies regarding your dog or cat. Upon completion of the course, each participant will receive an American Safety and Health Institute (ASHI) Pet First Aid Certification Card.

Class fee includes: (1) ASHI Pet First Aid Student handbook to take home, first aid supplies to be used in the classroom, and life-sized pet manikins to practice new skills on while in classroom.

Bloodborne Pathogens

Bloodborne Pathogens is a 2-hour program that will expand your knowledge and understanding of what bloodborne pathogens are and how risks of exposure can be reduced. This 1-year certification will assists in satisfying the training requirements of the U.S. Department of Labor, OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard.

Personal Safety and Security Awareness

This general-audience safety course helps to improve one’s urban personal safety and security awareness, to develop the ability to recognize potentially unsafe environments and situations, to improve one’s reaction time to avoid and/or reduce unsafe confrontations/situations, and above all, develop a mindset to survive any/all dangerous and hazardous situations. The course will cover safety and security at home, during travel, at work, at school, and while shopping. Through lecture, class discussion, and video scenarios, class participants will cultivate the CAPS mindset for an improved quality-of-life.

Class Length: 2 Hours Tuition: $25

Personal Safety and Security Awareness for Seniors

This course assists seniors in developing a mindset for safety and security in the home, while traveling, and in various venues. Emphasis will be on the participants developing safety habits such as, ensuring their residence (when at home) and car (when traveling) is secured, and on the participants developing a family/community of support and awareness towards a safe environmental lifestyle. Seniors will become aware of the increased vulnerabilities that comes with aging, however, will become aware that such vulnerabilities do not have to negatively affect one's quality-of-life when a CAPS mindset for safety and security is adopted and maintained.

Class Length: 2 Hours Tuition: $25

Personal Safety Awareness for Kids

This course assists kids and young adults (10 to 17 years) in developing a 21st-Century safety and security mindset for the personal difficulties and hazards they may face in the urban environment. Safety and security topics of discussion presented will include, traveling to and from school, to the mall, and other areas of leisure activity. Bicycle and skateboard safety and responsible behaviors will be discussed, along with discussions to encourage limiting the level of distractions from smartphones and other electronic devices. Each participant will be introduced to and encouraged to develop his or her GDP (“Good Deeds Potential”) at home, in school, and within his or her community.

Class Length: 2 Hours Tuition: $25

Workplace Safety and Security Awareness

This course develops safety and security awareness in the workplace through lecture and discussion, with scenario-based examples in handling various hazardous and dangerous situations. Additional topical workplace situations to be covered are; consequences of internal harassment and bullying, active shooter preparedness and response, and the organizational benefits of developing a safe work environment. The course will conclude with a workplace perimeter security evaluation and recommendations discussion.

Class Length: 2 Hours Tuition: $25

As an additional benefit: An organizational “We Care” program can be offered as an adjunct training opportunity for DSC member organizations to cover various aspects of their employees’ quality of life regarding safety and security at work, during travel (defensive driving), and during their leisure actives.

School/Campus Safety and Security Awareness

This course builds a safety and security mindset in and around school/campuses and creates an individual’s awareness of the potential hazardous and predators that the education environment may attract. The participants will be encouraged to become more vigilant throughout their travels in and around campus. Active shooter institutional preparedness and response will be discussed, as well as each participant’s need to individually develop a mindset to survive such an incident.

Class Length: 2 Hours Tuition: $25

Gun Safety and Security Awareness

Discussions will teach gun safety and security at home, in travel, and responsible [basic] gun handling habits. In addition, active shooter safety awareness and suggestions on what to do will be discussed, as well as personal protection and your right to stop-the-threat. This course will not be a debate on the 2nd Amendment or the right to bear arms, but the concerns that should be in place when one decides to legally own or carry a firearm.

Fire Safety Awareness

Basic fire safety tips and precautions will be presented and discussed to develop the public’s mindset for fire safety awareness, and recognition of National Fire Prevention Month [in October] and Fire Prevention Week [usually the 2nd week in October]. Emphasis is placed on individual and community organizational involvement in implementing basic fire safety habits and practices to reduce the human contributing factor in home fire mishaps.

Distracted-Driving Addiction Awareness

This course is an extension of the Defensive Driving safety course, but with emphasis on distracted driving and its hazards. Lecture and discussion will bring focus on the ever-growing tendency of individuals in our society/communities engaging in high levels of Driving-Distracted and continuing to do so with the knowledge that such behavior invites hazardous situations. However, they continually to do so without acknowledging their uncontrolled addiction to such behaviors. United States and global stats/studies will be presented to reveal the powerful addictive nature of our smartphones, and the need for constant social media involvement during our daily travels.
