Operation Lifesaver is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing collisions, injuries, and fatalities on and around railroad tracks and highway-rail grade crossings. Since 1972, it has provided free rail safety education programs to communities across the United States.
In the U.S., a person or vehicle is hit by a train approximately every three hours — a tragic reality that is often preventable through awareness and education.
Operation Lifesaver Delaware is now led by the Delaware Safety Council, continuing the mission of promoting rail safety through education, outreach, and community engagement.
Through partnerships with state agencies, local organizations, and rail operators, the program works to ensure Delaware residents understand the risks around railroad tracks and crossings—and how to stay safe.
Our trained volunteers provide free rail safety presentations for schools, community groups, drivers, first responders, and businesses.
We participate in local events, fairs, and campaigns to spread awareness about rail safety and responsible decision-making near tracks.
Programs like “See Tracks? Think Train!” encourage safe behavior and help reduce preventable incidents.
Trains can run on any track, in any direction, at any time.
Never walk or drive on tracks outside of marked crossings.
Trains take a mile or more to stop and cannot swerve.
Help make Delaware safer by scheduling a presentation, becoming a volunteer, or sharing life-saving rail safety information.
